google and sun

it would be remiss of me not to talk about google and their new and shiny partnership with sun that everybody's been talking about for the last few days. it appears that google is really interested in one or more of {java, openoffice}. so here's what i think: in order to successfully market an OS, the first thing you need is apps. without usable applications, an OS is nothing. so that's what they're doing. they're starting to put together a suite of applications that are web-based, and therefore, easily separable into server-client pieces and can run on GoOSe.

i'm not sure exactly why they're supporting java, but it probably has to do with the fact if they support java, then they get for free all the applications that have been written for java (and there's a lot of them). plus, java's been around for a while, the API is standardized, and by supporting java, they allow developers to easily write new apps for the new platform.

ah, conspiracy theories are so much fun.. :)

I don't think this had much to do with a Google or web-based operating system. Most of Google's news, like this, are business deals. The Google Toolbar is really important to them: they want it on every computer, period, and that isn't happening, which is why they keep trying to bundle it with things, in this case, Java Runtime or whatever it is.

Google already uses java and sun products a fair bit, not to mention previous employees (and a CEO), so for them this probably doesn't mean much, just a further commitment. Plus now they may use openoffice for something. we'll see about that but it seems in the fairly early stages, with probably little decided at this point.

Yeah, but the whole point of a conspiracy theory is to try and see if there's a bigger picture that all the little pieces fit into.. :)

kats you're going crazy. I think Google just has an insane amount of smart ambitious people running around like chickens with their heads cut off with no overarching strategy. They have no idea what they're doing, but they're throwing a lot of things at the wall and some of them stick.

Now guess who this is without your dirty Nishant IP tracking tricks.

But it's no fun not using dirty IP tracking tricks. I'm gonna guess Dmitry.. the only other person who would use a "chickens with their heads cut off" analogy would be stockwell, and he'd definitely have thrown in some pro-MS propaganda.

As for their lack of overarching strategy.. fine, I accept that they may not be doing anything I'm hypothesizing about, but (a) it's fun to hypothesize and (b) if they're not, then they SHOULD be.

plus who else would know how Nishant was tracked down?

it'd be interesting to work for google and see what the little pieces add up to from their side

But if Kats did that, then he'd have to give up his day job conspirorizing.
And it might be really annoying to actually know and not be able to speculate or comment on all the many speculations. Cause it is fun.

So kats, have you seen reader.google.com? It's such a piece of crap. If google can't come up with a decent RSS reader I wouldn't trust them with an OS or office suite.

you're right.. it is a piece of crap. and yeah, if their OS or office suite is of that quality, i don't think anybody would use it. what matters now is how fast and how well they can fix it up. let's wait and see..
