After reading about how governments seem to be becoming ever more oppressive lately, ideas like this are beginning to sound better and better. Waterworld, anyone?

It'd be even easier to be oppressive on an isolated base. Captain's king, and the like.

I don't think those things are meant to house more than a family or two at most. Who'd want to be oppressive to n other people, for small values of n?

Then you're dependent on others for food, electronics, textiles? Cause doing all that yourself isn't practical
And if you're dependent, then you live by someone else's rules.

Better yet, let's colonize space. Unlike oceans, where you have to worry about pesky things like warships, it's pretty easy to avoid getting whacked in outer space.

The above is only half in jest.

And for the record, I totally call dibs on 20000 Varuna. It's literally got my name on it.

It's only a matter of time before the One World Government is formalized and then you won't be able to escape the domain of the New World Order anywhere on Earth. MUHAHAHAHAHA!!!

PS: You created your own Captcha?

"on Earth" being the key phrase in that sentence :) I'm all in favor of space colonization too, but at the rate we're going that's going to take a while.

And yeah, I prefer to build than to buy (so to speak). This website is, after all, a playground for me to experiment in.

How about we put money into a pot and fund some space colonization ourselves? It would only take a few million for some suborbital hardware, especially if we can hire some IIT grads to do the grunt work... ;)

The money in a pot I'm fine with, but suborbital junk I'm not :)

Sigh.

I guess we'll just have to aim for Mars, then.
