Important life lesson* #3: if you put a small amount (say, a couple of fistfuls) of elbow macaroni into a pot of boiling water, they will arrange themselves into a donut shape at the bottom of the pot.

*Not really an important life lesson.

does this depend on the position of the heat source under the pot?

It might. But I think it's more a function of the shape of the pot, since that determines the currents of boiling water. As long as the bottom of the pot is fairly conductive, the exact position of the heat source shouldn't make too much of a difference.
